Non-isothermal unsteady pressure-driven flow of Jeffery fluid over a flat surface bounded by two side walls under an inclined magnetic field

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering · 2026

Ohmic heating offers versatile and efficient heating solutions in fluid flows across diverse industrial, medical, and environmental applications, contributing to enhanced process performance, product quality, and energy efficiency. Therefore, this article describes the impact of Ohmic heating on the time-dependent flow of an incompressible magnetized Jeffery fluid through a plane surface with a variable pressure gradient, with viscous dissipation also incorporated into the energy equation. This study presents a novel investigation of unsteady, pressure-driven Jeffery fluid flow under an inclined magnetic field with simultaneous Ohmic heating and viscous dissipation in a confined geometry, which has not been explored previously. Numerical simulations of the governing partial differential equations are performed using a finite difference method with successive over-relaxation. Results reveal that fluid velocity increases by up to 25% with higher Jeffery fluid parameters and decreases by 10–15% with stronger magnetic fields, while temperature rises by 18–22% due to combined Ohmic heating and viscous dissipation. Graphical representations provide insight into velocity and temperature patterns for various flow parameters. Comparisons with previously published results show excellent agreement, confirming the reliability of the numerical framework. These findings provide practical guidance for industrial and biomedical applications, including polymer extrusion, lubrication, glass and paper production, and cardiovascular flow studies, while quantitatively demonstrating the novel multi-physics interactions in Jeffery fluid flows.

Abstract Endoscope is a very important tool for medical diagnosis and they have many clinical applications. The endoscope now is a very important tool used for determining real reasons responsible for many problems in the human organs in which the fluid is transported by peristaltic pumping such as the stomach, small intestine, etc Therefore, this paper discusses the influence of an endoscope on the peristaltic flow of a Jeffery fluid in an annulus by considering the entropy generation. The inner tube which is uniform and rigid fulfilled the slip conditions, while the outer tube having a sinusoidal wall has a no-slip condition. The impacts of thermal radiation and viscous dissipation are also considered in the energy equation. The flow analysis has been developed for low Reynolds number and long wavelength approximation. The analytical solution for velocity, pressure gradient, temperature, streamlines, entropy generation, and Bejan number is obtained using the perturbation method, and then the obtained results are plotted to see the influence of different physical parameters. The major outcomes disclosed that the velocity profile decreases near the region of the inner tube due to the slip parameter and the inner tube radius. However, it increases due to the inner tube velocity and amplitude ratio. The temperature distribution rises with the Brinkman number. On the other hand, it declined for the radiation parameter. Furthermore, the entropy generation increases for the Brinkman number, but the Bejan number decreases for the Brinkman number. The present study has application in endoscopes, which is important to diagnose problems in internal organs. Also, the variation of pressure gradient helps to maintain the flow rate which is essential during the insertion of the catheter into the artery.

Exploration of the dynamics of heated non-Newtonian Casson fluid within an annular region of eccentric cylinders subject to peristaltic motion

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering · 2024

The flow of non-Newtonian fluids is widely observed in industry and biology, for example, enhanced oil recovery, chemical processes such as in distillation towers and fixed-bed reactors and in the applications of pumping fluids such as synthetic lubricants, colloidal fluids, liquid crystals, and biofluids (e.g., animal and human blood). Therefore, the present study delineates the heat transfer analysis of a Casson fluid within the annular region of eccentric cylinders subjected to peristaltic motion, considering the influence of thermal radiation. The outer cylinder remains rigid and moves at a constant speed, while the inner cylinder, featuring a sinusoidal wave along its wall, exhibits flexibility. The governing two-dimensional equations for the movement of the Casson fluid are reformulated under the assumption of the lubrication hypothesis. The perturbation scheme is used to find approximate results for velocity, temperature, and pressure gradient. A graphical representation is utilized to study the fluctuation of various flow fields with different imperative parameters. The results reveal that the liquid velocity declines as the Casson parameter increases, while the temperature decreases due to the amplified effect of thermal radiation. This study has applications in endoscopy, which is important for diagnosing problems in internal organs. Additionally, the variation of the pressure gradient helps maintain the flow rate, which is essential during the insertion of a catheter into an artery.
